Mumbai: In a major policy decision, the Maharashtra government has approved the operation of yellow bike taxis in cities with a population of over one lakh. The initiative, aimed at improving urban transport, is expected to create 20,000 jobs—10,000 in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and another 10,000 across the rest of the state.
Key Features of Maharashtra’s Bike Taxi Policy
1. Identification & Safety Measures:
Bike taxis will be painted yellow for easy identification and will be equipped with GPS tracking. Police verification of drivers, insurance coverage, and compliance with safety norms will be mandatory to ensure passenger security.
2. Bike Pooling for Private Two-Wheelers:
Private two-wheeler owners will be allowed to offer bike pooling services, provided they have a fitness certificate, a valid license, and insurance under the Motor Vehicles Act.
3. Fare Regulation & Electric-Only Policy:
Passenger fares will be set by regional transport authorities, and only electric bike taxis will be permitted under this policy to promote environmental sustainability.
4. Driver Eligibility & Women-Friendly Service:
Only individuals aged between 20 and 50 will be eligible to operate bike taxis. Female passengers will also have the option to choose a female driver for added safety.
The government expects this initiative to provide affordable last-mile connectivity, ease traffic congestion, and reduce pollution in cities across Maharashtra.
