New Delhi: In a significant anti-narcotics operation, INS Tarkash, a frontline frigate of the Indian Navy, has seized over 2,500 kg of narcotics in the Western Indian Ocean. The successful interception reinforces the Navy’s commitment to maritime security and countering illegal activities at sea.
Joint Operation Against Maritime Crime:
Deployed under the Western Naval Command for Maritime Security Operations since January 2025, INS Tarkash has been actively supporting Combined Task Force (CTF) 150—a Bahrain-based multinational coalition aimed at combating terrorism and illicit trafficking. The ship is also participating in Operation Anzac Tiger, a joint multinational security initiative.
On March 31, 2025, while on patrol, INS Tarkash received intelligence inputs from Indian Navy’s P-8I aircraft about suspicious vessels operating in the region. Suspecting illegal narcotics trafficking, the warship swiftly altered its course to intercept the targets.
Seizure of Massive Narcotics Consignment:
After systematically questioning and monitoring multiple vessels in the vicinity, the naval team intercepted a suspect dhow. In a coordinated effort involving Marine Commandos, a specialist boarding team conducted a thorough search of the vessel.
The raid led to the seizure of 2,500 kg of narcotics, including:
• 2,386 kg of hashish
• 121 kg of heroin
The drugs were found hidden in various cargo holds and compartments onboard the dhow. Following the seizure, the suspect vessel was taken under the control of INS Tarkash, and its crew was subjected to detailed questioning regarding their operations and possible links to other illegal networks.
Strengthening Maritime Security in the Indian Ocean:
The Indian Navy’s proactive maritime security operations continue to deter illicit trafficking, terrorism, and organized crime at sea. With its involvement in multinational naval missions, India is playing a crucial role in ensuring stability and security in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
