Nagpur: In a groundbreaking medical achievement, AIIMS Nagpur has successfully performed a rare and complex surgery, giving a new lease of life to a 23-year-old cancer patient. The procedure, which involved the removal of a tumor affecting multiple organs, was deemed too risky by other hospitals but was skillfully executed by the expert surgical team at AIIMS Nagpur.
The patient had been suffering from extra-testicular non-seminomatous germ cell tumor since June 2024. Despite undergoing chemotherapy, he developed haemoptysis (coughing up blood) due to a large residual tumor in the right lobe of the liver, which had extended through the diaphragm and infiltrated the right lower lung lobe. Given the extent of the disease, surgical intervention was the only viable option.
A Complex Surgery Few Hospitals Would Attempt:
Due to the tumor’s complexity, the surgery required the removal of the right half of the liver, diaphragm, and the lower lobe of the right lung. Most hospitals refused to perform such an extensive procedure, leading to the patient being referred to AIIMS Nagpur’s Department of Surgical Oncology.
Under the leadership of Dr. Shubhada Khanapure, Associate Professor of Surgical Oncology, the case was thoroughly analyzed and meticulously planned. The surgery was successfully performed by a highly skilled team, including Dr. Jaykumar, Dr. Nirjhar Raj, Dr. Hemant Bodhankar, Dr. Neelesh Shrivastav, and Dr. Nilesh Nagdeve. A team of anaesthetists led by Dr. Gajanan Chavan and Dr. Revanth, along with critical care specialist Dr. Suchita Meshram, ensured the patient’s stability throughout the procedure.
AIIMS Nagpur’s Commitment to Advanced Healthcare:
Following the surgery, the patient has made a full recovery and is now in stable condition. Dr. Prashant P Joshi, Executive Director of AIIMS Nagpur, praised the team’s efforts, stating, “This was a highly challenging case, but our team’s expertise and AIIMS Nagpur’s advanced medical facilities made it possible. The successful outcome highlights our commitment to providing world-class healthcare to the people of Nagpur and beyond.”
Additionally, Dr. Manish Shrigirwar played a crucial role in arranging all necessary materials free of cost through the MJPAY scheme, ensuring financial relief for the patient.
This landmark surgery further solidifies AIIMS Nagpur’s reputation as a leader in medical innovation, offering cutting-edge treatments for cancer and other critical conditions. The Department of Surgical Oncology continues to be at the forefront of healthcare advancements, pushing the boundaries of medical science for the benefit of patients.
