Nagpur: A 45-year-old woman and her dog died of suspected electrocution while walking on a ground during a thunderstorm accompanied by heavy rain and strong winds in Hudkeshwar on Wednesday, May 21, evening.
The tragic incident occurred between 8:15 pm and 8:30 pm near the Gajanan Maharaj Temple in the NIT Ground area of Old Subhedar Layout, under Hudkeshwar Police Station limits. The deceased, identified as Sheetal Shyam Kale, had stepped out with her dog when both were found lying unconscious near an iron electric pole in the garden.
Her husband, Shyam Sangeetrao Kale (51), later reached the spot and managed to separate his wife and their pet using a wooden bat, as the dog’s metal chain appeared to be conducting electricity from the pole.
Sheetal was immediately rushed to a private hospital and later referred to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), where doctors declared her brought dead.
Following a complaint by her husband, the Hudkeshwar Police registered a case of accidental death. Authorities are examining whether electric leakage from the pole caused the fatal incident.
This incident has raised concerns over the safety of public electrical infrastructure, especially during extreme weather conditions like thunderstorms.
