Domestic issues, substance abuse and mental stress major contributors
Nagpur: The recent suicides of married men have brought the mental stress faced by men into the spotlight. Many refrain from seeking help from mental health experts due to social stigma, ultimately succumbing to trauma. Shockingly, data obtained from Nagpur Police reveals that between 2020 and 2024, of the 3,570 suicides reported, 2,816 — nearly 80% — involved men.
Among these cases, methods used included hanging, self-immolation, poisoning, drowning, and other forms of self-harm.
The data highlights that adult men are disproportionately affected, with financial stress, professional pressure, and the stigma surrounding emotional expression and counseling believed to be significant factors. Experts have stressed the need for targeted mental health interventions and awareness campaigns to encourage men to seek support without hesitation.
The findings underscore the growing stress levels among men in the city, despite its reputation for a laid-back lifestyle. Lifestyle changes and mounting stress are prompting many to take extreme steps. Experts have emphasized the urgent need for counseling and awareness programs to address these concerns.
“Suicides can range from planned decisions to impulsive acts. Timely professional intervention can help prevent such incidents,” said psychiatrist Dr. Ashish Mohide.
Alarming rise in juvenile suicides:
Between 2020 and 2024, 111 juveniles, including 59 girls, took their own lives, primarily due to family disputes. In 2024 alone, 23 teenagers, including 13 girls, ended their lives. Minor disagreements, such as restrictions on mobile usage and games, academic pressures, and relationship issues, were often the triggers, according to data.
