Nagpur: The modern and fast-paced lifestyle driven by increasing work pressure and stress is contributing to a growing trend of divorces in Nagpur. Between 2018 and 2024, 5,995 couples opted for mutual separation through the Family Court in the city, indicating an average of two divorces per day as per media reports. Experts attribute the rising divorce rates to a diminishing mindset for compromise among couples.
Rising Ego and Changing Marital Dynamics:
Experts highlight multiple causes for divorces, such as infidelity, domestic violence, substance abuse, incompatibility, lack of intimacy, and financial disagreements. However, a major reason now cited is the rising ego among both partners, especially when both are working professionals.
“Parents of working girls often assert that their daughters are financially independent and deserve a different lifestyle, while the boy’s family expects the bride to manage household chores despite her job. This leads to conflicts. Additionally, pre-marriage relationships and unresolved issues are also contributing to the growing number of divorces,” explained experts.
Importantly, divorce seekers belong to diverse age groups, highlighting that no specific age bracket dominates the trend.

Families Need to Mediate, Not Escalate:
Experts stated that instead of resolving disputes between spouses, family members often aggravate them. Discussing and resolving issues before approaching the court can help prevent separations. Families and society must acknowledge their responsibility to reduce divorce cases.
