Nagpur: In a major development in an alleged religious conversion case, a joint team of Nagpur Police, Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS), and Nagpur ATS arrested a close associate of self-styled preacher Changur Baba during an early-morning operation in north Nagpur on Saturday.

The accused, Idhu Islam (40), was apprehended around 5 am from a narrow lane in the Ashinagar area. Police sources said Islam functioned as a key aide and handled financial matters for Changur Baba, who is under investigation for alleged large-scale and organised religious conversions.

Officials said the operation was carried out swiftly and discreetly to prevent the accused from fleeing. Teams from Pachpaoli police station and other city police units were also deployed to provide logistical support and maintain security during the arrest.

Sources confirmed that an arrest warrant had been issued against Islam and that Uttar Pradesh police had been searching for him for more than two years. Despite sustained efforts by investigating agencies, he had repeatedly managed to evade arrest until the coordinated action in Nagpur.

Investigators noted that Changur Baba had established his roots in Nagpur several years ago, where he allegedly began his activities in open grounds and public spaces. He later shifted his base to Uttar Pradesh, expanding his network and operations. Police believe Islam played a critical role in managing funds and coordinating activities linked to the alleged conversion racket.

The arrest is being seen as a major breakthrough in the ongoing investigation. Authorities expect that further interrogation of the accused will help uncover crucial details about the network, funding mechanisms, and individuals involved in the alleged religious conversion activities.

Police officials said further legal action will follow, and the accused is likely to be produced before the competent court and handed over to Uttar Pradesh ATS for subsequent proceedings.
