Nagpur: A 70-year-old man residing in Hazari Pahad was duped in a SIM swap fraud by a conman who attempted to use the victim’s mobile number to access his bank account. The accused has been apprehended by Gittikhadan police.
The complainant, Murlidhar Mahadeorao Gajbhiye, owns a function hall named Shri Sant Gajanan Celebration Hall in Dabha. On April 21, the accused, identified as Sattar Kutubuddin Ansari (50), resident of Bhandhe Plot, Umred Road, approached him under the pretext of booking the hall. Under the guise of making a call, he took the complainant’s phone, discreetly removed the SIM card, replaced it with a fake one, and left.
Ansari later went to Canara Bank and tried to update the KYC linked to the stolen SIM. However, bank officials grew suspicious and called the complainant, thereby exposing the fraud. The accused was caught red-handed attempting to commit financial fraud using the victim’s SIM.
Based on the complaint, PSI Gede registered an offence under Sections 319(2), 318(4), 336(3), 336(4), and 340(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The accused has been taken into custody, and further probe is ongoing.
