Nagpur: Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Co. Ltd. (MSEDCL) successfully uncovered 23 cases of electricity theft in a single day in the Ekta Nagar locality under the jurisdiction of the Lashkaribagh subdivision.

A special drive targeting high-loss areas in the city led to the discovery. On Monday, January 20, during an inspection of the Ekta Nagar feeder under the Kamptee Road branch office, MSEDCL officials, led by Nagpur circle’s Chief Engineer Dilip Dodke, identified 23 instances of power theft. Among the 40 customers inspected, 18 were found to have reconnected their supply illegally after disconnection due to pending dues, while 5 were directly stealing electricity through tampered meters. The operation was conducted with tight police security due to the sensitivity of the area.

Aggressive Campaign Against Power Theft:

MSEDCL is currently evaluating the stolen units and financial losses caused by the offenders. This drive is part of an intensified crackdown on electricity theft across 25 high-loss feeders and other areas in Nagpur. Teams comprising Executive Engineers Rajesh Ghatole and Sanjay Shringare, along with Additional Executive Engineers Hemendra Gaur and Shailesh Washimkar, participated in the operation.

In the last 20 days, MSEDCL has inspected 8,331 connections across the Congress Nagar, Butibori, Civil Lines, Mahal, and Gandhibagh divisions, resulting in the detection of 428 cases of electricity theft.

Public Appeal to Curb Power Theft:

MSEDCL has urged citizens to report incidents of electricity theft in their vicinity to the local flying squads, enforcement offices, or nearby MSEDCL branches. Informants are promised appropriate rewards, and their identities will be kept confidential.

MSEDCL emphasized that electricity theft is a social crime that leads to significant financial losses for both the utility and the public.
