Pune: Petrol pump operators in Pune have initiated an indefinite strike as of Tuesday October 16, citing unmet demands from petroleum companies. With Diwali just around the corner, the strike threatens to disrupt the festive plans of Nagpurians living in Pune, who traditionally rely on private buses to travel home due to the unavailability of train tickets during the holiday season.

The operators have halted the dispatch of fuel tanks to petroleum depots, which is expected to lead to significant fuel shortages starting Wednesday. This move is likely to cause inconvenience to the public, affecting not only local commuters but also those planning to travel long distances.

The Petrol Dealers’ Association in Pune has raised concerns about faulty tender practices in the transportation of fuel, which they claim have led to an increase in fuel theft. Despite repeated appeals to address these issues, no corrective measures have been taken, pushing the operators to go on strike.

The association is demanding an immediate cancellation of all existing transportation tenders and the introduction of new ones with reasonable rates that would ensure safer and more secure fuel delivery. Furthermore, they are calling for the immediate suspension of officials who overlooked safety protocols, leading to operational inefficiencies.

In a strong stance against alleged corruption, the dealers have also urged for a thorough police investigation into the possible involvement of officials in fuel theft activities.

As Diwali approaches, the fuel crisis could severely impact travel plans, particularly for Nagpurians in Pune who depend on private buses to return home. The strike's timing could disrupt festive preparations, leaving many stranded or struggling to find alternative travel arrangements.
