Nagpur: Panic gripped the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) campus on Saturday, August 2, 2025, after two separate snake sightings were reported in different wards within hours of each other.

The first incident occurred around 2 PM in the hospital’s Paying Ward, where a 2-foot-long non-venomous Checkered Keelback (water snake) was spotted. The Wildlife Welfare Society was immediately informed, and members successfully captured the snake before releasing it into the wild.

Barely an hour later, at 3 PM, another snake was sighted in Ward No. 5, which houses young children. The presence of a snake in the pediatric ward caused fear among staff and visitors. Wildlife Welfare Society members Nitish Bhandakkar and Nikhil Jamnik rushed to the spot and safely captured the 3-foot-long non-venomous Checkered Keelback amidst a large crowd.

Both snakes were later released into a nearby forest area. The Wildlife Welfare Society has urged hospital authorities to take preventive measures to avoid such incidents in the future.
