Nagpur: Recognising the importance of providing a space for senior citizens to spend moments of leisure during the twilight of their lives, District Collector Dr. Vipin Itankar on Thursday directed Nagar Parishads to establish recreation centers. These centers will be equipped with various amenities aimed at engaging and entertaining senior citizens.
The directive was issued during a meeting of the District Senior Citizen Coordination and Monitoring Committee, held at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hall in the Collector’s Office. The meeting was attended by Assistant Commissioner of the Social Welfare Department, Sukeshini Telgote, along with senior officials from the department and office-bearers of senior citizen associations.
The meeting also addressed topics such as the appointment of two newly elected members from the Maharashtra Senior Citizen Federation to the committee, as well as the selection of coordinators, deputy coordinators, and members for the senior citizen cell.
Dr. Itankar expressed concern over the neglect and ill-treatment faced by elderly parents from their own families, despite their lifelong dedication and care. He emphasized the need for recreation centers to offer senior citizens a peaceful environment during their remaining years, particularly for those who may face emotional and social neglect at home.
These centers are envisioned as a means to improve the quality of life for senior citizens, offering them a space to relax, engage in recreational activities, and foster social connections.
