Nagpur: In a proud moment for Vidarbha, Justice Atul Chandurkar, a senior judge of the Bombay High Court and a distinguished jurist from the region, has been appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court of India. His appointment follows the approval granted by the Central Government based on recommendations made by the Supreme Court Collegium earlier this week.
Justice Chandurkar becomes the seventh judge from the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court to be elevated to the apex court, joining the league of eminent jurists from Vidarbha who have previously served on the Supreme Court bench.
Notably, three of these judges — Justice Mohammad Hidayatullah, Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde, and the current Chief Justice of India Bhushan R. Gavai — went on to hold the highest judicial position in the country as Chief Justices of India.
Other distinguished names from Vidarbha to have served on the Supreme Court include Justice Vivian Bose, Justice J.R. Mudholkar, and Justice V.S. Sirpurkar.
Additionally, Justice A.P. Sen, originally from Madhya Pradesh but an alumnus of Nagpur’s Science College and Law College, had also served as a judge of the Supreme Court.
Justice Chandurkar’s elevation is being seen as a testament to the legal talent nurtured in the Vidarbha region and marks another milestone in its long-standing contribution to the Indian judiciary.
