Nagpur/Thane: In a significant push towards integrating advanced safety technology into public transport, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Wednesday launched the state’s first AI-enabled ‘smart’ non-AC bus under the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC). The newly introduced bus will operate on the Thane-Nagpur route and is designed to enhance commuter safety, especially for women passengers.

Unveiled in Thane in the presence of Transport Minister and MSRTC Chairman Pratap Sarnaik, the bus features cutting-edge digital and safety enhancements, including the Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), which helps prevent road mishaps through real-time alerts and monitoring.

“MSRTC serves more than 5.5 million passengers daily. Ensuring their safety is our top priority. These AI-powered buses represent a modern, tech-driven approach to public transport,” Shinde said during the launch event.

Key Features of the AI-Enabled MSRTC Smart Bus:

  • Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS): Issues alerts for potential collisions, pedestrian movements, and unintended lane changes.
  • Driver Monitoring Cameras: Keeps track of signs of driver fatigue or intoxication.
  • 360-Degree Surveillance: Cameras installed at the front, rear, and sides of the bus help eliminate blind spots and enhance on-road safety.
  • Onboard CCTV Monitoring: Enhances security for passengers through constant video surveillance.
  • Passenger Counting Sensors: Track boarding and deboarding for real-time occupancy updates.
  • Wi-Fi and LED Screens: Entertainment and information facilities onboard.
  • GPS Tracking: Enables route tracking and real-time location updates.
  • Foam-Based Fire Suppression System: Adds a layer of safety in case of fire emergencies.

The launch of this smart bus marks a new chapter in MSRTC’s fleet modernization efforts, aimed at providing a safer and smarter commuting experience across Maharashtra. With plans to gradually expand the fleet, the state government is positioning technology at the center of its public transportation strategy.
