Nagpur: In view of the ongoing heatwave in the region, Nagpur District Collector and Chairman of the District Disaster Management Authority, Dr. Vipin Itankar, on Wednesday, April 23, appealed to citizens—especially labourers—to take necessary precautions to avoid health risks during extreme temperatures.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Nagpur district is currently experiencing a severe heatwave, with temperatures soaring above normal levels. Vulnerable groups such as construction workers, farmers, beggars, street vendors, the elderly, women, and children are at a higher risk of heat-related illnesses during this period.

Key Safety Guidelines Issued:

  • Avoid Midday Sun: Citizens, especially outdoor workers, are advised to avoid exposure to the sun between 12 noon and 4 pm. Work shifts should be scheduled during early morning or late evening hours.

  • Protective Clothing: While stepping outdoors, individuals should cover their head and ears with a white cotton cloth or scarf to prevent direct sun exposure.

  • Hydration Is Crucial: People should drink plenty of water throughout the day. Additional fluids such as ORS, buttermilk, lemon water, coconut water, and sugarcane juice are recommended during the afternoon.

  • Employers’ Responsibility: Contractors and organizations employing labourers must ensure provision of sufficient drinking water, shaded rest areas, and scheduled breaks during peak afternoon hours. Offices must also provide water and shade for visitors.

  • Travel Advisory: Carry drinking water while travelling. Consume seasonal fruits and vegetables with high water content such as watermelon, muskmelon, oranges, grapes, pineapple, cucumber, and salads.

  • Clothing Tips: Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored cotton clothes. Use umbrellas, hats, towels, or traditional covers to avoid direct sun exposure. Always wear footwear while stepping outdoors.

  • Stay Informed: Citizens are urged to stay updated with weather forecasts and heatwave advisories via radio, television, newspapers, and the official IMD website: https://mausam.imd.gov.in.

  • Indoor Safety Measures: Keep windows and curtains closed during the day to prevent heat entry. Limit outdoor work to early morning and late evening hours, and stay in well-ventilated, cool spaces.

Special Attention to At-Risk Groups:

Infants, young children, outdoor workers, pregnant women, individuals with mental health conditions, or those suffering from chronic illnesses like heart disease or high blood pressure are more vulnerable to heat-related complications. They should avoid strenuous activities and consume fluids frequently to stay hydrated.
