New Delhi: India and the United States are set to deepen their space collaboration after NASA invited the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to join its Moon Base Programme, marking another significant step in the growing strategic partnership between the two countries.
The invitation was extended during the ninth India-US Civil Space Joint Working Group meeting, held at ISRO headquarters in Bengaluru on August 5 and 6. Officials from ISRO, NASA, and the US State Department reviewed ongoing projects and explored future cooperation in human spaceflight, lunar exploration, scientific research, and commercial space activities.
The proposed collaboration builds on the Artemis Accords, which provide an international framework for peaceful cooperation in lunar exploration. Both countries also agreed to continue discussions on sharing open scientific data and advancing future partnerships in space science and astronaut technologies.
Focus On Lunar Exploration And Human Spaceflight
The meeting highlighted opportunities for expanding cooperation beyond satellite missions. India and the US discussed joint efforts in developing technologies related to human spaceflight, lunar missions, and advanced space research, reflecting the growing scope of their strategic relationship.
Building On NISAR Success
The discussions come after the successful launch of the NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) mission, a landmark joint Earth observation satellite designed to monitor changes on the planet's surface and improve scientific understanding of natural hazards and climate-related events.
Officials said both nations are now exploring additional collaborative missions and scientific projects.
Commitment To Sustainable Space ActivitiesIndia and the United States also reaffirmed their commitment to the long-term sustainability of outer space activities. Both sides expressed support for guidelines developed under the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) and reviewed ongoing international efforts to promote the responsible and peaceful use of space.
Part Of Broader Strategic Partnership
According to the US Embassy, the expanded space cooperation is being pursued under the India-US Transforming the Relationship Utilizing Strategic Technology (TRUST) initiative, in line with the joint vision outlined by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump in February 2025.
The meeting was inaugurated by ISRO Chairman Dr. V. Narayanan and US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, with senior officials from ISRO, NASA, and the US State Department leading discussions on future collaboration.
The latest talks indicate that India and the US are moving toward a broader partnership that extends beyond satellite missions to include Moon exploration, human spaceflight, scientific innovation, and next-generation space technologies.
