Nagpur: A concerning rise in pregnancies among unmarried women has come to light, highlighting the consequences of inadequate sexual education and the widespread exposure to online sexual content.
In the past seven months alone, 336 unmarried women in Nagpur sought abortions, according to data from government and private hospitals. Experts, however, estimate that the actual numbers could be significantly higher due to unreported cases.
Key Insights from the Report:
• Abortions Among Minors:Between April and October 2024, three girls below the age of 15 underwent abortions in government-authorized centers. Additionally, 87 cases were recorded among girls aged 15–19 in both government and private hospitals. The actual figures could be higher, especially among minors below the legal marriage age of 18.
• Age Group Trends:The highest number of abortions was observed in the 25–29 age group, with 2,341 cases reported during the same period.
• Private Hospitals Dominate Abortions:Of the total 6,788 abortions recorded last year in Nagpur, 93% (6,324 cases) were conducted in private hospitals, while only 464 were performed in government institutions.
Reasons Behind Abortions:
For unmarried women, abortions were primarily sought due to unintended pregnancies stemming from unethical relationships and societal taboos. On the other hand, married women accounted for over 6,000 abortions, citing reasons such as health concerns, career aspirations, or job commitments.
Legal and Social Perspectives:
India’s Supreme Court has affirmed the constitutional right of all women, married or unmarried, to safe and legal abortions, ensuring their bodily autonomy and reproductive rights. However, societal stigma often discourages open discussions on sexual health and education, exacerbating the issue.
Expert Opinions:
Health experts emphasize the urgent need for comprehensive sexual education and open communication within families to address this growing concern. They also call for increased access to government facilities for safer and more affordable abortion procedures.
