Nagpur: The Maharashtra government has announced the completion of the ambitious 701-km-long Nagpur-Mumbai Expressway, officially named the Hindu Hriday Samrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samriddhi Mahamarg. The expressway, built at a cost of Rs 67,000 crore, is expected to be inaugurated in February, reducing travel time between Mumbai and Nagpur from 16 hours to just 8 hours.
A Game-Changer for Connectivity:
The Nagpur-Igatpuri section, spanning 625 km, is already operational, and the final segment’s completion marks a major milestone in the project. The expressway directly connects 10 districts and indirectly benefits 14 others, promising to boost the social and economic development of Maharashtra.
Wildlife Safety and Urban Development:
In addition to improving connectivity, the expressway prioritizes environmental considerations with over 80 structures designed for wildlife safety. The project also includes plans for 18 smart towns along the highway, with industries tailored to the unique characteristics of each region.
Key Achievements and Economic Impact:
The expressway has already demonstrated its potential:
• Toll Collection: In two years, 1.52 crore vehicles have used the highway, generating Rs 1,100 crore in toll revenue.
• Cost Efficiency: The expressway is expected to save time, fuel, and reduce industrial freight costs, benefiting industries across the state.
Leadership and Vision:
The project was spearheaded by Anil Kumar Baliram Gaikwad, appointed Chief Engineer by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Gaikwad, now the Managing Director of the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), played a pivotal role in executing the project.
