Nagpur: A High Court lawyer has accused two men of assaulting him, issuing death threats and attempting to extort Rs 2 lakh over a criminal case involving one of the accused. Based on the complaint, Jaripatka Police have registered a case and launched an investigation.

According to police, the complainant, Jaswant Khemchand Khubnani (32), a High Court advocate residing near Mahatma Gandhi School in Jaripatka, was at his office on the night of July 30 with a friend when the two accused allegedly entered the premises.

The accused have been identified as Roshan Kayyum Sheikh (40) of Friends Colony, Gittikhadan, and Nilesh Gadekar (40) of Dharampeth.

Police said the dispute is linked to a rape case registered against Roshan Sheikh in February 2025 after a woman accused him of sexually exploiting her on the false promise of marriage. He was subsequently arrested and sent to jail in that case.

The complainant alleged that Roshan had previously threatened and assaulted him on July 8 and July 15, 2026. However, he did not lodge a complaint at the time after members of the accused's family apologised.

On July 30, the two accused allegedly abused the lawyer inside his office and demanded Rs 2 lakh, claiming they had spent a significant amount of money on the criminal case. Roshan allegedly threatened to kill the advocate if the money was not paid, while Nilesh allegedly assaulted him with fists before both fled the spot.

The complainant further alleged that Roshan later made a WhatsApp call, again abused and threatened him, and demanded that he arrange the money immediately.

Jaripatka Police have registered an offence under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) related to extortion, criminal intimidation, assault, house trespass, obscene abuse and common intention. Further investigation is underway.
