Nagpur: In a landmark achievement, doctors at Lata Mangeshkar Hospital (LMH), Hingna Road, Nagpur, successfully performed Central India’s first-ever single-stage penile reconstruction surgery, marking a significant milestone in the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery.
A team of expert plastic surgeons at NKP Salve Institute of Medical Sciences & Research Centre (NKPSIMS & RC) and LMH carried out the complex microvascular surgery over 9.5 hours on a young male patient from Rajasthan. The patient had lost his penis due to cancer eight years ago and had been living without a functional organ since then.
The procedure involved reconstructing the penile shaft and urethra using tissue from the patient’s forearm, which was then transferred to the pubic region. Surgeons meticulously connected microvascular blood vessels and nerves to ensure the organ had both blood flow and sensory function—restoring not just structure but also functionality.
“This successful penile reconstruction marks a breakthrough for our institute and for patients across Central India. Such microvascular surgeries require precision, expertise, and advanced infrastructure,” said Dr. Sajal Mitra, Dean, NKPSIMS & RC, who commended the surgical team for their outstanding work.
The surgical team included:
Dr. Jitendra Mehta, Dr. Sameer Mahakalkar, Dr. Ashwini Panditrao, Dr. Dev Patel, Dr. Abhiram Mundle, Dr. Kanwarbir, and Dr. Pallavi from the Plastic Surgery Department.
Dr. Anjali Bhure, Dr. Madhushree Shah, Dr. Ketaki Marodkar, Dr. Rachana Naitam, and Dr. Gunjan provided expert anesthesia support during the procedure.
The entire operation was supported logistically by Dr. Nitin Deosthale, Medical Superintendent and Vice Dean.
This successful case also underscores the hospital’s capability in handling gender affirmation surgeries and traumatic penile reconstruction, offering new hope to many patients in need of such specialized procedures.
The patient is recovering well post-surgery.
Notably, surgeries at Lata Mangeshkar Hospital are performed free of cost under government health schemes such as Ayushman Bharat Yojana and Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Aarogya Yojana, making advanced healthcare accessible to all.
