Nagpur: The Nagpur district has achieved a major milestone in the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Suryaghar Free Electricity Scheme, crossing 26,000 rooftop solar installations and generating over 105 megawatts (MW) of solar power.
The scheme, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to provide up to 300 units of free electricity per month to domestic consumers and enable income through surplus power generation, is witnessing rapid adoption across Maharashtra.
Under this scheme, households that install rooftop solar systems can offset their electricity bills entirely and earn additional income by selling excess power to Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL). The central government offers subsidies of Rs 30,000 for 1 kW, Rs 60,000 for 2 kW, and up to Rs 78,000 for 3 kW rooftop solar systems. MSEDCL also provides free net meters to beneficiaries.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has been actively promoting the scheme to ensure direct benefits to the common man. Since the scheme’s nationwide launch on February 13 last year, a total of 26,588 households in Nagpur have installed rooftop solar panels as of April 16, 2025, resulting in a collective generation capacity of 105.45 MW. Remarkably, 212 installations were completed in Nagpur district on a single day—April 16.
Statewide, a total of 1,79,753 households have adopted the scheme, generating 651.42 MW of solar power. Nagpur leads all districts with the highest number of installations (26,588), followed by Jalgaon (13,328), Pune (12,775), Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (11,442), Nashik (10,870), Amravati (9,918), Kolhapur (8,017), Dhule (5,773), Solapur (5,441), Ahilyanagar (5,197), and Wardha (4,871). Nagpur accounts for 14.79% of all rooftop solar projects in the state and contributes 16.42% of the total solar generation capacity.
MSEDCL is the nodal agency for the implementation of this scheme in Maharashtra. It has also simplified the loan process and collaborated with banks to offer loans at concessional interest rates to help domestic consumers install rooftop solar systems.
To further boost rural participation, incentive grants will be provided to gram panchayats that actively encourage villagers to enroll in the scheme.
