Pakistan's former prime minister Imran Khan was taken back to Adiala Jail early on Friday after being examined at Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad, where doctors declared him medically fit, according to Pakistan's information minister and media reports. The hospital visit followed a Supreme Court order directing authorities to arrange a detailed medical examination for the jailed politician.
The court had asked that Khan be moved to the hospital within 48 hours after concerns were raised about his health. A team of doctors including an ophthalmologist, cardiologist and physician carried out the checks, and Khan's sister Azma Khan was present during the examination.
Khan's party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), said it would press for transparency, while authorities sealed off the area around the hospital during the transfer. Khan's lawyers have argued that his prison conditions have worsened his health, including his eyesight, though the government has disputed those claims.
The 73-year-old former cricket captain has been imprisoned since August 2023 and faces multiple cases that he says are politically motivated. His return to jail after the brief hospital visit has again drawn attention to his treatment, health and legal battle in Pakistan's tense political climate.
