Nagpur: Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Darshan Dugad, currently posted in Nandurbar district, has gone on sick leave and is reportedly absconding after being booked in a rape case by Imamwada Police in Nagpur. The case, filed by a city-based woman doctor, accuses the officer of sexual assault under the pretext of marriage.

According to Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Narendra Hiware, who is heading the investigation, a police team from Imamwada recently visited Nandurbar to inquire about Dugad. “However, the accused officer had applied for sick leave and is currently untraceable. His mobile phone is also switched off,” ACP Hiware confirmed.

The complainant, a doctor by profession, alleged that Dugad befriended her via Instagram, developed a romantic relationship, and later sexually exploited her with false promises of marriage. Based on her complaint, Imamwada Police registered a case under relevant sections of rape and deception.

When questioned about whether Dugad’s status as an IPS officer was affecting the investigation, ACP Hiware stated, “There is no pressure on the department. We are following due process and conducting a thorough investigation.”

There is speculation that Dugad may approach the court for anticipatory bail. However, police have not received any official update on this. “As of now, no bail application or court order has been received in connection with the case,” ACP Hiware said.

This high-profile rape case involving a serving IPS officer has triggered outrage and raised questions about accountability and transparency in law enforcement. Imamwada police continue their efforts to trace Dugad as the investigation progresses.
