Nagpur: In a significant step towards enhancing the safety and reliability of electric locomotives, the Electric Loco Shed, Ajni under Central Railway’s Nagpur Division has successfully commissioned a comprehensive CCTV-based video monitoring system on its testing pits. This modern surveillance arrangement enables detailed video recording of the roof, under-frame, and side equipment of locomotives before they are dispatched for traffic.

Two testing pits at the Electric Loco Shed, Ajni—where “Ready Locos” are prepared for service—have been equipped with four strategically placed CCTV cameras on each pit. Each camera is supported by 50W LED lighting to ensure clear visibility at all times, including during night hours, thanks to the dedicated lighting arrangements focused on the under-frame area.

The innovative setup includes one camera mounted on the upper side near the Overhead Equipment (OHE) to capture roof-mounted components, one camera inside the pit for comprehensive videography of under-frame parts, and two cameras positioned on either side of the pit to record bogie equipment, under-slung compressors, battery boxes, and other side-mounted systems.

This arrangement ensures that all critical components of locomotives—roof, under-frame, and sides—are thoroughly documented and visually inspected before entering service. The initiative significantly boosts operational safety and reliability, helping to prevent technical faults and improve performance standards.
