Nagpur: While India’s victory over New Zealand in the T20 international at the VCA Stadium, Jamtha, brought cheer and celebration for cricket-loving Nagpurians, those who ignored traffic and parking guidelines had to pay a heavy price in terms of money and time.
Despite repeated appeals by Nagpur traffic police and clear banners placed along Wardha Road and adjoining stretches, several motorists chose to park their vehicles improperly. As a result, locals imposed parking charges with ₹500 collected for four-wheelers and ₹100 for two-wheelers from violators who failed to follow the designated parking instructions.
Anticipating heavy vehicular movement for the January 21 match, traffic police had rolled out a detailed traffic and parking management plan. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Lohit Matani said clear routes and parking zones were demarcated well in advance to ensure smooth traffic flow. Separate parking facilities were arranged for two-wheelers, four-wheelers, VIPs, VCA members, school buses, police personnel and media representatives.
Vehicles heading towards Jamtha from Nagpur were directed to take Wardha Road, and turn left to head to the National Cancer Institute and proceed towards Mauli Nagar for designated parking zones. Entry from the Jamtha T-point was strictly restricted for players and VIPs. Additional parking with feeder bus services was arranged at the Brahmakumari area for vehicles coming from Wardha and Butibori.
However, many spectators ignored these instructions, leading to congestion and enforcement action by traffic police. While disciplined motorists enjoyed a smooth commute and celebrated India’s win, traffic violators ended up spending extra money and time, learning a costly lesson in the process.
