Smart Meter Blamed for Rising Electricity Bills? Check Home Earthing First, Says MSEDCL

Nagpur: Amid growing public debate over smart electricity meters and complaints of inflated power bills, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has urged consumers not to hastily blame the new meters. Officials have clarified that faulty home earthing or neutral leakage could be a significant technical reason behind increased electricity consumption readings.

According to MSEDCL’s Nagpur office, power leakage within household wiring systems can unknowingly add extra units to the meter, ultimately increasing the electricity bill borne by consumers.

How Faulty Earthing Impacts Power Bills

Every electrical appliance in a household operates through two wires — Phase and Neutral. Electricity flows through the phase wire to the appliance and returns via the neutral wire. However, if the earthing system is weak or if there is a defect in the neutral wire, a portion of the electrical current may leak into the ground.

Smart meters are highly accurate and independently record current flowing through both phase and neutral wires. In cases of internal leakage due to poor wiring or inadequate earthing, the smart meter correctly registers the consumed units, resulting in higher billing.

Major Causes of Electricity Leakage

Officials have identified several common technical issues that may lead to power leakage:

  • Deterioration of insulation in old wiring, causing leakage through walls.
  • Dry earthing pits or corrosion of copper earthing strips, leading to improper grounding.
  • Leakage from metal-bodied appliances such as refrigerators, geysers, or electric irons.
  • Interconnection of neutral wires with neighbouring premises or other circuits, which may cause abnormal meter readings.

Preventive Measures for Consumers

MSEDCL has advised residents to take the following precautions to avoid unnecessary electricity expenses:

  • Conduct an insulation resistance test of the entire household wiring through a licensed electrician.
  • Install an Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker (ELCB) or Residual Current Circuit Breaker (RCCB) in the main switchboard. These devices automatically disconnect the power supply in case of leakage, preventing electric shocks and reducing excess billing.
  • Maintain proper moisture in the earthing pit, especially before monsoon and during summer, by adding water along with salt and charcoal.
  • Apply for meter testing with MSEDCL only if earthing and wiring are confirmed to be in proper condition and the bill still appears unusually high.

Awareness Key Amid Technological Change

Officials emphasized that while smart meters are designed for precision and transparency, consumers must ensure their internal wiring and grounding systems are well maintained. Instead of attributing increased bills solely to new technology, homeowners are encouraged to verify the technical health of their electrical systems.

Proper earthing, authorities stressed, is not only essential for electrical safety but also plays a crucial role in controlling electricity expenses.
