Nagpur: After ten years of dedicated service and countless successful operations, Don, a highly trained Doberman from the Nagpur Police canine squad, has officially retired, leaving behind a legacy of precision, discipline, and unwavering loyalty.
Known within the force as a “super sleuth,” Don was instrumental in cracking complex cases and tracking down suspects with remarkable accuracy. His sharp instincts and swift response at crime scenes made him an indispensable asset to investigating teams.
Inducted into the police force in 2015, Don underwent rigorous training at a specialised dog training centre in Pune, where he developed advanced tracking and detection skills. He was initially handled by Assistant Sub-Inspector Vasanta Shinde and later by Police Sub-Inspector Dashrat Thakur, under whose guidance he refined his operational capabilities.
Over the years, Don became a dependable presence at crime scenes, consistently delivering results and earning the trust of officers. His contributions significantly aided in solving several challenging cases, reinforcing the importance of canine units in modern policing.
To honour his service, the Nagpur Police dog squad organised a farewell ceremony on Tuesday. Senior officers and handlers gathered to acknowledge his dedication and celebrate his achievements.
Police Sub-Inspector Nitin Awadoot, associated with the squad’s training and operations, praised Don’s discipline and adaptability. He noted that while Don maintained intense focus during duty hours, he was equally lively and playful off duty—traits that strengthened his bond with handlers and enhanced his performance.
Following his retirement on March 31, Don will now be cared for by his handlers, ensuring a peaceful and comfortable life in a familiar environment.
Don’s remarkable journey highlights the critical role of trained canine units in law enforcement, showcasing how skill, training, and companionship can come together to make a lasting impact on public safety.
