Nagpur: In a significant stride towards sustainable development, the Public Works Department (PWD) has initiated the use of plastic waste in road construction using bituminous macadam technology in Selu-Kalam, Kalmeshwar tehsil of Nagpur district.
The innovative project falls under the jurisdiction of Public Works Department Division No. 2 and is part of the 100-day program envisioned by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The initiative aims to reduce environmental harm by reusing plastic waste in road construction, making roads more durable and eco-friendly.
To promote this eco-conscious technique, the department conducted hands-on training sessions for engineers, hot mix plant owners, and contractors involved in road construction. The training, led by Executive Engineer Chandrashekhar Giri, demonstrated how plastic waste can be effectively integrated into bitumen to enhance road strength and longevity.
The practical training session took place directly at a hot mix plant, where participants learned the accurate measurement of various aggregate sizes essential for bituminous macadam. They also received demonstrations on testing the material mix and ensuring proper electronic and mechanical synchronization at the plant.
As many as 38 engineers from the department attended the training, gaining firsthand knowledge of this innovative technique. Trainees expressed that the session provided clear guidance on the scientific reuse of plastic waste for building environmentally sustainable roads.
The actual construction work on the Selu-Kalam road is being undertaken under the supervision of Sub-Divisional Engineer Rupesh Bodde, with contractor Anand Ashok Budhraja playing a key role in its execution. During the practical session, both Executive Engineer Chandrashekhar Giri and Sub-Divisional Engineer Bodde showcased a live demonstration of the road-laying process using plastic-enhanced bitumen.
