Nagpur: New Kamptee Police have arrested a 27-year-old man for allegedly threatening a doctor with defamation and demanding ₹2 lakh from him to prevent the circulation of a purportedly defamatory video about his hospital on social media.
The accused has been identified as Gulam Nazar alias Sheikh Mohammad (27), a resident of Kadar Zenda Chowk, Kamptee.
According to police, the complainant, Dr. Tanzim Azmi (46), runs City Hospital on Ranala Road in New Kamptee. On June 18, Gulam Nazar had visited the hospital for treatment after falling ill. The doctor reportedly provided him treatment free of cost and discharged him.
However, between 8.48 pm on August 21 and 2 am on August 22, the accused allegedly returned to the hospital and threatened the doctor. Police said he allegedly claimed that he would upload a video defaming the hospital on social media.
The accused allegedly demanded ₹2 lakh, warning that the hospital would be defamed if the money was not paid. He also allegedly abused the complainant and threatened to attack him with a knife.
Following the complaint, New Kamptee Police registered a case against Nazar under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including sections 308(3), 308(4), 352 and 356(2).
Police launched an immediate investigation and traced and arrested the accused. Further investigation is underway.
