Nagpur: Amid soaring temperatures crossing 40°C in Nagpur, the City Traffic Police Department has announced operational changes to traffic signals at 33 key junctions during afternoon hours. In a bid to prevent heatstroke incidents, minimize unnecessary idling, and help conserve fuel, traffic signals at these locations will now operate in Red Blinker Mode from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM daily.
The signals will switch to the Stop, Watch and Proceed mode, allowing vehicles to pass cautiously without coming to a complete halt, especially during hours of minimal traffic flow. This initiative is aimed at safeguarding motorists from the intense heat and reducing fuel wastage caused by prolonged halts at red signals.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Archit Chandak, said the decision was taken based on real-time traffic assessments and to enhance commuter convenience without compromising road safety. “Citizens will benefit from time and fuel savings, while also gaining protection from the intense afternoon heat,” he said.
To maintain safety standards, a speed limit of 20 km/h has been set for vehicles passing through these red blinker signals. The traffic department has appealed to all motorists to adhere to the speed limit and cooperate with traffic personnel for smooth traffic movement.
