Nagpur: Lakadganj police have registered a case against a 31-year-old man for allegedly assaulting a traffic constable, tearing his uniform and threatening him after being stopped for a traffic violation near Telephone Exchange Square on October 8.

According to the complaint, Head Constable Naresh Rameshji Likhar, 45, attached to the Lakadganj Traffic Branch, was conducting an enforcement drive with his team around 7 pm. The police were taking action against motorists riding triple-seat and driving on the wrong side.

The accused, Mohammed Shoaib Khan, a resident of Shantinagar near the police outpost, was allegedly riding a Bajaj Chetak scooter (MH 49 DB 0165) against traffic without wearing a helmet.

When Likhar stopped him and questioned him about the violation, the constable attempted to photograph him using an official device. Khan allegedly tried to snatch the device and argued with the constable when asked to move his scooter to the roadside.

Despite Likhar’s attempts to pacify him, Khan allegedly grabbed the constable’s hand and pulled at his uniform shirt, tearing it. He also allegedly threatened to ensure that the constable lost his uniform if a challan was issued against him.

The incident allegedly obstructed Likhar from carrying out his official duties during the traffic enforcement drive.

Based on the constable’s complaint, Lakadganj police registered a case against Khan under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The accused had not been arrested at the time of the report. Further investigation is underway.
