Mumbai: In view of the ongoing Iran–Israel geopolitical tensions, the Maharashtra Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection Department has taken several measures to ensure uninterrupted supply of domestic and commercial LPG cylinders across the state. The government has announced the formation of district-level committees and control rooms to closely monitor LPG distribution and prevent disruptions.
The department has also clarified that there is no shortage of domestic LPG cylinders in Maharashtra, urging citizens not to believe rumours circulating on social media.
District-Level Committees to Monitor LPG Supply
To strengthen coordination and prevent any disruption in LPG distribution, the state government has decided to constitute special committees at the district level.
These committees will include the District Collector, Superintendent of Police, District Supply Officer and representatives of government gas companies. Their primary responsibilities will include monitoring LPG supply chains, maintaining law and order, and submitting daily reports on the situation.
In the Mumbai–Thane rationing region, a separate committee will function under the Controller of Rationing, with support from police and rationing officials to ensure proper coordination and distribution.
Control Rooms to Be Set Up Across the State
To address public concerns and handle complaints efficiently, control rooms will be established at the state, divisional, district and taluka levels. Authorities will also introduce a WhatsApp facility for grievance redressal, allowing citizens to report issues related to LPG supply.
Oil companies have been directed to immediately resolve technical issues related to gas booking apps and missed-call services to ensure consumers do not face inconvenience while booking cylinders.
Essential Services to Get Priority LPG Supply
The state government has also announced priority allocation of LPG cylinders for essential services. Institutions such as hospitals, government hostels, school and college mess facilities, Ashram schools and the Mid-Day Meal Scheme will receive priority supply.
A separate list of such institutions will be prepared and priority distribution orders will be implemented to ensure uninterrupted services, especially in view of upcoming religious festivals.
Adequate LPG Stock Available in Maharashtra
According to the department, the average daily LPG demand in Maharashtra is around 9,000 metric tonnes. To meet the demand, production at refineries has been increased to nearly 11,000 metric tonnes per day over the past two days.
Authorities have reiterated that sufficient stock and production capacity are available, and there is no shortage of domestic LPG cylinders in the state.
For commercial LPG, supply is being prioritised as per the guidelines of the Central Government, with essential institutions receiving preference.
Alternative Fuels Being Explored
Authorities have also directed district committees to explore the possibility of using alternative fuels such as coal or kerosene where feasible, while strictly following the norms of the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board.
Meetings will also be held with hotel and restaurant associations to encourage the use of alternative cooking arrangements wherever necessary.
Action Against Fake News and Rumours
To prevent panic among citizens, the government has directed officials to disseminate accurate information through radio, FM channels, television and newspapers on a daily basis.
Authorities have also warned that strict action will be taken against individuals spreading fake or misleading information on social media regarding LPG shortages.
Local representatives and Gram Panchayat members will assist in spreading awareness and preventing panic among residents.
Fuel Supply Remains Stable
Officials have also confirmed that the state has adequate stock of Piped Natural Gas (PNG), petrol and diesel. Refineries in Maharashtra are currently operating at full capacity and producing around 15,000 kilolitres of petrol and 38,000 kilolitres of diesel per day to meet demand.
The Food and Civil Supplies Department has appealed to citizens to avoid panic buying and not believe rumours, assuring that adequate arrangements have been made to ensure smooth fuel supply across Maharashtra.
