Nagpur: The New Kamptee Police Station has registered a fraud case against a man accused of impersonating a government employee and cheating a woman of more than Rs 15 lakh on the pretext of transferring agricultural land records.

According to police, complainant Megha Ritesh Dhopte (29), a resident of Khairi in Kamptee, had visited the Kamptee Tehsil Office on November 20, 2023, to initiate the process of adding her name to agricultural land records belonging to her father in Gada village.

At the tehsil office, she allegedly met accused Swapnil Kshirsagar (35), a resident of Nimkheda, Kamptee, who claimed to be an employee at the tehsil office. Police said the accused gained her trust by assuring her that he would facilitate the transfer of the land in her name.

He allegedly told the complainant that the land records were mortgaged with Bank of India and that money would be required to process the work and pay senior officials. Between November 20, 2023 and May 21, 2026, the accused allegedly collected Rs 15.07 lakh from the complainant on various occasions.

When the work remained incomplete, the complainant repeatedly approached the accused, who allegedly continued avoiding her. Later, when his phone became unreachable, she visited the Kamptee Tehsil Office and discovered that no person named Swapnil Kshirsagar was employed there.

Police said the accused was not holding any government post and had dishonestly deceived the complainant by falsely posing as a tehsil employee.

Based on the complaint, police sub-inspector Vikas Tidke registered an offence under Sections 316(2) and 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Further investigation is underway.
