Nagpur: Marking the birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, inmates at Nagpur Central Jail have crafted an eco-friendly replica of the historic Shivneri Fort, the birthplace of the legendary Maratha ruler. The initiative reflects the Maharashtra Prison Department’s guiding principle of “Reformation and Rehabilitation,” aimed at nurturing creativity and constructive engagement among inmates.
The replica has been developed under the guidance of senior prison authorities, including Additional Director General and Inspector General (Prisons and Correctional Services), Maharashtra State, Pune, and Special Inspector General (Prisons and Correctional Services), Maharashtra State, Pune. Using environmentally friendly materials available within the prison premises, convicted inmates designed the fort model based on printed photographs and their creative interpretations.
Tribute to the Founder of Hindavi Swarajya
Born on February 19, 1630, at Shivneri Fort, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj went on to establish Hindavi Swarajya by conquering and constructing over 350 forts. These forts served as strategic military outposts, administrative hubs, and defensive strongholds that safeguarded the Maratha Empire. Shivneri Fort, sanctified by the ruler’s birth, continues to stand as a symbol of Maharashtra’s valorous history.
Prison authorities stated that the initiative was undertaken as a mark of gratitude and respect towards the iconic warrior king. The activity not only commemorates Shivaji Maharaj’s legacy but also encourages inmates to channel their skills into meaningful and culturally enriching pursuits.
