India’s Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Concept Earns Global Recognition
Nagpur: In a major boost to India’s railway modernization ambitions, the Vande Bharat Sleeper First AC compartment concept has won the prestigious 2026 A’ Design Award, one of the world’s leading international design honors.
The award-winning concept was developed by Kinet Railway Solutions and received the Bronze A’ Design Award in the Mobility and Transportation Design category for its innovative, passenger-focused interior design.
The announcement was made in New Delhi on May 20, 2026.
International Jury Praises Passenger-Centric Design
The international jury commended the Vande Bharat Sleeper concept for its thoughtful functionality, refined aesthetics, and strong focus on passenger comfort and usability.
The recognition marks a significant milestone for India’s growing capabilities in railway rolling stock design and manufacturing, placing the country among leading global transportation innovators.
The First AC compartment concept was first showcased during the International Railway Equipment Exhibition 2025 and is expected to influence the final production models of the upcoming Vande Bharat Sleeper trains.
Modern Interiors Designed for Comfort and Privacy
The award-winning design focuses on creating a calm, comfortable, and premium travel environment for long-distance passengers.
Key features of the Vande Bharat Sleeper First AC compartment include:
- Convenient staircases for upper berths
- Individual reading lights
- USB charging ports
- Compact personal storage spaces
- Premium finishes with warm metallic accents
- Spacious layouts prioritizing privacy and comfort
The interiors also incorporate subtle cultural elements inspired by traditional Indian block-printing art, developed in collaboration with local artists to create a uniquely Indian identity within a modern rail experience.
Practical additions such as bedside-style storage niches integrated beneath staircases further enhance passenger convenience.
Designer Says Project Aims to Redefine Indian Railways’ Identity
Commenting on the international recognition, Evgeny Maslov, Chief Industrial Designer of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Project, said the team wanted to create more than just a comfortable train interior.
“Our ambition was to help shape a new image for Indian railways — modern, passenger-oriented, and emotionally connected to people,” he said.
Maslov added that public transport today plays an important role in shaping a country’s cultural identity and public perception.
A’ Design Award Among World’s Largest Design Competitions
The A' Design Award & Competition is regarded as one of the world’s largest and most influential design competitions.
The 2026-27 edition featured:
- 312 international jury members
- Participation across 196 categories
- Coverage in 126 languages
- Global media partnerships and industry representation
The award is considered highly prestigious within the international design and innovation community.
Kinet Railway Solutions Driving India’s Railway Modernization
Kinet Railway Solutions was established to manufacture and maintain 1,920 Vande Bharat sleeper coaches in partnership with RVNL and Indian Railways.
The company currently operates:
- A state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Latur
- An engineering center in Hyderabad
- A maintenance depot under construction in Jodhpur
Additional maintenance facilities are also planned in Delhi and Bengaluru as part of India’s next-generation rail infrastructure expansion.
The Vande Bharat Sleeper project is expected to significantly enhance passenger comfort, support domestic manufacturing, and strengthen India’s position in the global railway export market.
