Nagpur: In a commendable act of alertness and compassion, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) of the Nagpur Division successfully rescued a mentally unstable man under ‘Operation Dignity’ after he was found dangerously perched on the engine of Train No. 12622.
The incident occurred on April 30 when a video alert was received by the Divisional Security Commissioner. Swiftly responding to the situation, RPF personnel, in coordination with the Overhead Equipment (OHE) staff, halted the train at Bharatwada at 12:43 pm. The man was safely brought down and temporarily housed in the Divyangjan (differently-abled) coach with the assistance of vigilant passengers.
Following the rescue, the train resumed its journey at 12:53 pm. During onboard inquiries, it was discovered that the man had boarded the train on the Ahmedabad route and was heading to Orai. A PAN card and mobile phone found in his possession enabled the RPF to trace his family, who confirmed that he had been missing and was undergoing mental health treatment.
The family arrived at the RPF Post in Nagpur on May 1 at 8:45 am with valid identification. After proper verification and the execution of a formal Surrender Panchnama in the presence of witnesses, the man was reunited with his loved ones.
The family expressed heartfelt gratitude to the RPF for their humane and timely intervention. The incident stands as a testament to the success of Operation Dignity, an ongoing initiative by Indian Railways aimed at rescuing and rehabilitating vulnerable individuals, including the mentally ill, abandoned, or destitute persons.
This rescue once again reinforces the RPF Nagpur Division’s commitment to ensuring safety, dignity, and human rights across the railway network.
