Nagpur: A 70-year-old retired man from Ajni area of Nagpur allegedly lost ₹5.5 lakh after unknowingly sharing his banking details through an APK file sent to his mobile phone under the pretext of pension card verification.

According to the complaint registered with Ajni police, the victim, Duryodhan Namdevrao Vaidya, a resident of Manewada-Besa Road, received an APK file on his mobile phone. The file allegedly asked him to enter information for pension card verification.

Believing the request to be genuine, Vaidya entered the required details. Shortly afterwards, he received a message informing him that money had been withdrawn from his bank account.

Police said an unidentified accused allegedly used the information obtained through the APK file to gain access to the victim’s Bank of India savings account and withdrew a total of ₹5.50 lakh online without his permission.

Following the complaint, Ajni police registered a case against an unidentified accused under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act, 2000.

Police are investigating the source of the APK file and the online transactions through which the money was allegedly siphoned off.
