Nagpur: Jaripatka Police Station have booked three persons after a 26-year-old woman alleged that her prospective groom and his family demanded a resort wedding or ₹3 lakh in cash as a precondition for solemnising the marriage.
The complainant, Shivani Vasudev Bombarde (26), a native of Amgaon in Gondia district currently residing at Dayalu Society in Jaripatka, stated that her marriage had been arranged with Umesh Nilkanth Deshbhratar (32), a resident of Charde Layout, Kondhali on Wardha Road. The engagement ceremony had already been completed.
According to the complaint, between February 22 and February 27, 2026, the accused allegedly contacted her over phone and insisted that the wedding ceremony must be organised at a resort. He reportedly warned that if the event was not conducted at a resort, she would have to pay ₹3 lakh in cash, failing which the marriage would be cancelled.
Police said the groom’s mother, Niranjana Nilkanth Deshbhratar (52), and another family member, Harshal Nilkanth Deshbhratar (28), allegedly supported the demand and pressured the woman to arrange ₹3 lakh as dowry. After she refused to comply, the accused allegedly broke off the marriage alliance, causing her mental distress.
Based on her complaint, police have registered an offence under Sections 4 and 6 of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961. Further investigation is underway.
