Nagpur: An alleged ‘open-air bar’ operating opposite the Ambazari Police Station has once again come under scrutiny after a drinking session in Sanjay Nagar, Pandharabodi, turned violent and led to an attempted murder case on Monday night.
According to police sources, an argument among individuals consuming liquor in public allegedly escalated into a violent attack, highlighting the growing menace of public drinking spots across Nagpur.
What were once isolated incidents of people consuming alcohol in public places have increasingly evolved into a significant law-and-order challenge in the city. Roadsides, vacant plots, parks and dimly lit corners have reportedly become informal gathering spots where liquor is consumed openly, often resulting in disputes, assaults and, in some cases, serious crimes.
One of the most controversial spots is located directly opposite the Ambazari Police Station. Residents allege that dozens of people assemble there every evening to consume liquor openly without fear of police action. Locals claim that despite repeated complaints, the illegal activity continues unabated.
The controversy has deepened with allegations from residents that some police personnel occasionally visit the spot and consume liquor there. These claims have fuelled public suspicion and raised questions over why the alleged drinking den continues to operate in full public view.
Residents say the nuisance goes beyond public drinking. Frequent arguments, abusive behaviour, harassment of passers-by, littering and occasional scuffles have made the area unsafe, particularly for women, senior citizens and families.
Similar public drinking hotspots are reportedly active in several parts of Nagpur, with citizens and police observers expressing concern over their potential role in contributing to disturbances and violent crimes.
Senior police officers acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations and said the matter would be investigated. “The matter is serious. We will verify the allegations, conduct an inquiry and, if any illegal public drinking spot is found to be operating or if there is negligence on anyone’s part, strict action will be taken,” a senior officer said.
