Nagpur: As the Maharashtra Legislature’s Winter Session concluded in Nagpur, an underreported issue came to light — the misbehaviour of political workers accompanying newly selected ministers and MLAs towards police personnel.

The week-long session transformed Nagpur into a security hub, with police forces from across Maharashtra deployed to protect political leaders. However, the challenge of managing the entourages of these leaders often overshadowed the primary security duties.

Entourages Challenging Authority

Political workers accompanying MLAs and ministers often displayed a sense of entitlement, reportedly flouting security protocols and challenging police authority. Several such incidents were reported, particularly during traffic management near Vidhan Bhavan and designated morcha points.

A source within the Nagpur Police Department, speaking anonymously, shared that these political aides frequently attempted to bypass barricades meant for MLAs and government vehicles. “They often arrive in private SUVs and try to breach security without proper documentation. When stopped, they refuse to comply and instead boast about their political affiliations,” the source said.

The incidents posed additional challenges for police personnel tasked with ensuring smooth operations during the high-profile event.

Tensions Amid Tight Security

Despite these challenges, the Winter Session concluded without major disruptions. “We’re just relieved that everything ended peacefully,” the police source added.

The conduct of political workers during such events raises important questions about accountability and respect for law enforcement, especially as Nagpur prepares for future high-security occasions.
