Nagpur: A 30-year-old woman from Nagpur was allegedly cheated of ₹6.84 lakh in an online investment scam after responding to a fake part-time job advertisement on Instagram. Gittikhadan Police have registered a cyber fraud case against an unidentified accused under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act.
According to the FIR, the complainant, Anjali Kumari (30), a resident of Gulshan Colony near Kiran TV, Katol Road, Nagpur, came across an Instagram page claiming to represent a “Mega Company”while searching for jobs online.
After opening the page, she registered her email address anjalik1665@gmail.com and mobile number 8140424515. On July 8, 2026, she received a call from a person using mobile number 9770085324, who claimed to be a representative of the company and offered her an online part-time job.
The caller asked her to continue the conversation on WhatsApp and later sent her a link. When she opened it, she was directed to a trading platform. The accused allegedly lured her by promising 30% returns and interest on the amount invested, claiming that higher investments would generate higher profits.
Believing the offer to be genuine, the complainant transferred a total of ₹6,84,076 to bank accounts provided by the accused through multiple transactions between July 8 and July 16, 2026.
When she later attempted to contact the accused, she found that the mobile number had been switched off and the trading platform was no longer accessible. It was then that she realised she had been duped in an online investment scam.
Based on her complaint, Gittikhadan Police registered a case under Sections 318(4), 319(2), 336(3), and 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) along with Section 66(D) of the Information Technology Act. Police have launched an investigation to identify and trace the cyber fraudsters.
Authorities have once again urged citizens to exercise caution while accepting online job offers, especially those promising high returns on investments, and to verify the authenticity of companies before transferring money.
