Nagpur, June 16, 2025: In a major boost to India’s renewable energy mission, Nagpur district has emerged as the frontrunner in the implementation of the Prime Minister’s ‘Suryaghar – Free Electricity Scheme’. The district has topped the state in rooftop solar installations, showcasing a remarkable commitment to clean and affordable energy.
As per the latest data available till June 15, 2025, Nagpur district has successfully installed 33,641 rooftop solar power units, the highest among all districts in Maharashtra. These installations have collectively generated a potential capacity of 132.35 MW of green energy, contributing significantly to the state’s overall solar output.
Across Maharashtra, 2,12,640 rooftop solar systems have been installed under Mahavitaran’s jurisdiction, with a total generation capacity of 812.76 MW. Among these, Nagpur alone accounted for over 15% of installations, underlining its leadership in sustainable energy adoption.
On June 15 alone, Nagpur added 124 new solar systems, with a combined generation capacity of 452.44 kW—a record feat highlighting the district’s swift progress in implementing the scheme.
When compared to other key districts, Nagpur outperforms by a considerable margin. Jalgaon has 15,868 installations, while Pune has 15,632. Together, these two still fall short of Nagpur’s total. Other districts in the Nagpur circle have also shown commendable progress: Amravati (12,331), Wardha (6,376), Buldhana (6,232), Akola (6,130), Chandrapur (5,616), Yavatmal (4,998), Bhandara (3,591), Washim (2,562), Gondia (2,511), and Gadchiroli (1,141). Notably, Wardha added 70 new systems on a single day, with a capacity of 241.7 kW.
The success of Nagpur district can be attributed to active citizen participation, efficient planning by local administration, and widespread awareness about the scheme’s benefits. Apart from reducing electricity bills, the adoption of solar energy also promotes environmental sustainability.
