Nagpur: In a major success against rising cyber fraud, the Cyber Police Station of Nagpur City acted swiftly in a “digital arrest” scam case and successfully ensured the return of the entire cheated amount of Rs 13 lakh (100%) to the complainants after due legal process.

According to police officials, an elderly couple was targeted by cyber fraudsters through a video call. The accused falsely claimed that a bank account had been opened in the couple’s name and that the account was being used by terrorists. The fraudsters further alleged that the couple had accepted commission money for allowing the account to be used, and therefore a criminal case had been registered against them.

To create fear, the scammers told the couple that they were being placed under “digital arrest” and instructed them to remain continuously on video call in front of the camera. The fraudsters then convinced the victims to transfer their savings to a so-called government account for verification, assuring them that the money would later be returned.

Under pressure and fear, the elderly couple transferred Rs 13,00,000 to the bank account provided by the fraudsters.

After realizing they had been cheated, the complainants approached the Cyber Police Station, Nagpur City, where a case was registered as Crime No. 38/2026 under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act, 2000, based on NCCRP Acknowledgement No. 31903260063001.

Police immediately initiated action in the matter. Following legal proceedings, the entire defrauded amount of Rs 13 lakh was successfully recovered and refunded to the complainants.

Officials also stated that one accused in the case is currently lodged in a jail in Delhi, and the process to take him into custody is underway.

The successful operation was carried out under the guidance of Nagpur Police Commissioner Ravinder Singal, Joint Commissioner Navinchandra Reddy, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Vasant Pardeshi, and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 1 & Cyber) S Rushikesh Reddy.

The operation was executed by a team led by Senior Police Inspector Yogesh Ghare, Assistant Police Inspector Shankar Padhare, and police personnel Rinkesh Thakur, Anil Mukanar, Nomesh Sathawane, Prafull Thakre, and Satish Wagh of Cyber Police Station, Nagpur City.

Rising Threat of Digital Arrest Scams

Police have once again urged citizens, especially senior citizens, to remain alert against so-called “digital arrest” scams. Law enforcement agencies clarified that no police or government authority conducts arrests through video calls or demands transfer of money for verification purposes. Citizens are advised to immediately report such incidents to cyber helplines or the nearest police station.
