Nagpur: In a pre-dawn crackdown aimed at safeguarding uninterrupted power supply to honest consumers, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) conducted a surprise inspection drive in Noor Nagar area of Mahadula under the Khaparkheda subdivision, exposing cases of electricity theft and initiating penal action against the offenders.
The raid was carried out at around 5:50 am on Friday, when an MSEDCL team swooped down on the locality and conducted a detailed inspection of 11 suspicious electricity meters. The operation sent shockwaves through the area, as four consumers were caught red-handed stealing electricity.
Direct Hooking from Incomer Line Exposed
According to officials, the accused consumers had illegally drawn power by directly tapping the incomer line, bypassing the electricity meter. The malpractice was detected during the inspection, leading to immediate action under Section 135 of the Electricity Act, 2003 (amended in 2007).
The total assessment for power theft in these four cases amounted to ₹2,57,570. In addition to the assessed amount, a compounding penalty of ₹22,000 was also imposed. The utility has initiated further penal proceedings as per law.
Officials Led the Early Morning Operation
The drive was conducted under the guidance of Executive Engineer Sudhir Hedau of the Saoner Division. The team included Sub-Divisional Engineer Mangesh Kahale, Assistant Engineer Rupesh Khavse, Chief Technician Suresh Atkare, and Senior Technician Trinetra Dhone.
Impact on Honest Consumers
MSEDCL officials stated that electricity theft places an additional burden on the distribution system, often resulting in low voltage supply and technical faults for consumers who pay their bills regularly. The crackdown is not merely punitive but is aimed at ensuring safe, transparent, and reliable electricity supply to all consumers.
The power utility has clarified that similar inspection drives will continue in rural areas to curb power leakage and maintain transparency in the distribution network.
Public Advisory Issued
Emphasising safety concerns, MSEDCL reiterated that electricity theft is not only a criminal offence but also poses serious risks to life and property. Citizens have been urged to obtain authorised electricity connections and avoid illegal practices to prevent accidents and ensure uninterrupted power supply.
