Nagpur: A 28-year-old man died during treatment after he was allegedly attacked with weapons by a group of five persons in Nagpur’s Shastrinagar area, following suspicion that he had provided information to police, Nandanvan Police said.

The incident took place around 8.45 pm on August 25 near The Prism Building in Shastrinagar, Kumbhartoli. According to the complaint, the victim, Akshay Bandu Vanjari, 28, was with his friend Ashwin alias Sonu Amit Rahangdale, 32, and others at a bar within the Nandanvan police station limits.

Akshay reportedly received a phone call from his wife and left for home. While he was on his way, accused Suraj Vilas Lanjewar, 30, Vandana Vilas Lanjewar, 47, Prashant Dinesh Akhare, 26, Hardik Marotrao Palandurkar, 24, and Pradeep Akhare, 48, allegedly confronted him.

Police said the accused suspected that Akshay had acted as a police informer, leading to the arrest of Suraj Lanjewar’s brother in a theft case. The accused allegedly threw chilli powder into Akshay’s eyes and assaulted him with fists.

Akshay returned to Rahangdale and narrated the incident. As the two proceeded towards home, the accused allegedly attacked Akshay with weapons, leaving him seriously injured.

He was initially taken to NHS Hospital and later shifted to AIIMS Nagpur for treatment.

Based on Rahangdale’s complaint, Nandanvan Police registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Arms Act. Police subsequently arrested four accused.

However, doctors examined Akshay at around 8.30 pm on August 26 and declared him dead during treatment. Following his death, Section 103(1) of the BNS, pertaining to murder, was added to the case.

Police are searching for the remaining accused and conducting further investigation.
