Hojai, Assam: A Rajdhani Express was stopped briefly in Assam's Hojai district on Wednesday morning after a herd of wild elephants was spotted near the railway tracks in Hawaipur, allowing the animals to cross safely before the train resumed its journey.
According to officials, forest staff noticed the elephant herd approaching the track as the Down Rajdhani Express was nearing the area. Immediate coordination between the forest department, the loco pilot, and the Lumding Railway Control Room helped ensure that the elephants crossed without incident.
The train was halted for a short period as a precautionary measure to prevent any possible collision. Once the herd had moved across safely, the train continued on its route.
Assam Forest Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah shared the video of the incident on social media, describing it as an unexpected stop that allowed the “adorable giants” to pass safely.
Officials said the episode reflects the continued cooperation between forest personnel and railway authorities in Assam to reduce human wildlife conflict and protect elephants moving through railway corridors.
The incident has once again highlighted the importance of timely alerts and coordination in areas where wildlife habitats intersect with major rail routes.
