Nagpur: Demonstrating swift action, Hudkeshwar Police solved a gold chain snatching case involving an 87-year-old woman within 48 hours and arrested one accused while recovering the stolen jewellery and vehicles used in the crime.
According to police, the elderly woman lives with her daughter and regularly visits the Om Shanti Prajapita Brahma Kumaris Ishwariya Vidyalaya in Hudkeshwar every morning. On June 6 at around 7 am, she was walking near Shivangi Nagar close to Kidzee School when two men arrived on a motorcycle.
Police said one of the accused, dressed in a checkered shirt, approached the woman under the pretext of helping her cross the road. Exploiting the moment, he allegedly snatched her 8-gram gold chain valued at around Rs 40,000 and fled with his accomplice.
Following registration of the case, Hudkeshwar Police launched an intensive investigation. Officers examined footage from more than 150 CCTV cameras and carried out technical surveillance to trace the suspects.
Based on intelligence inputs, police identified and arrested Sayyad Jabi (32), a native of North Bengaluru, Karnataka.
During interrogation, the accused allegedly admitted involvement in the crime along with his associate Manjunath Venkata Swamy from Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu. He also revealed that the stolen gold chain had been pledged at a jewellery shop in Itwari.
Police subsequently recovered the chain from Gupta Jewellers in Itwari and seized two motorcyclesused in the offence.
The operation was carried out by PI Anamika Mirzapure, API Vipin Ramteke and the Hudkeshwar Police team under the guidance of DCP Zone 4 Rashmita Rao.
