Kotwali police book four family members after 22-year-old woman alleges assault and sexual abuse at Mahal residence

Nagpur: A 22-year-old woman from Chhattisgarh has alleged that she was assaulted and sexually abused by her boyfriend's family members in Mahal after they opposed her proposed marriage with their son.

Based on her complaint, Kotwali police have registered a case against four members of the family — the woman's boyfriend's mother, father, uncle and brother. All four accused are residents of Mahal.

According to the complaint, the woman was in a relationship with Mohammed Shoeb (29), a resident of Naik Road near CP & Berar College in Mahal. She alleged that Shoeb had promised to marry her but had been repeatedly delaying the marriage.

On September 10 at around 6.30 pm, the woman went to Shoeb's residence to meet him. However, Shoeb was not present at home at the time. His mother, father, uncle and brother were allegedly there.

The woman alleged that the four family members opposed her marriage with Shoeb and got into an argument with her. During the altercation, Shoeb's mother and brother allegedly caught hold of both her hands and pushed her to the ground.

She further alleged that while she was struggling, Shoeb's father pulled at her clothing and his uncle allegedly sexually assaulted her.

Following the complaint, Kotwali police registered a case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including sections dealing with rape, assault, voluntarily causing hurt, criminal intimidation and common intention.

Police are investigating the allegations and recording statements as part of the probe. No conclusion regarding the allegations has been established at this stage.
