New Delhi: Thailand has overtaken the Maldives as the most popular international honeymoon destination for Indian couples, recording the highest share of honeymoon package bookings between October 2023 and September 2024, according to travel booking platform MakeMyTrip.
The Maldives, once a leading choice, saw a 16.2% year-on-year decline in honeymoon bookings. Meanwhile, other popular international destinations, including Indonesia, Mauritius, and Vietnam, gained in booking shares this year, MakeMyTrip reported.
The insights are based on MakeMyTrip’s report, “How India Travels for Honeymoon,” which compared data from October 2023 to September 2024 with the previous year. The findings showed that Thailand increased its share by 5.2%, moving ahead of the Maldives, which led last year.
On the domestic front, the Andaman Islands replaced Kerala as the top choice for honeymooners, with a 6.9% year-on-year increase in bookings. Kashmir also gained traction, moving to third place with a 3.6% rise in bookings. Goa’s bookings remained steady compared to last year, while Himachal Pradesh saw a 4% decline in honeymoon package bookings.
“As the wedding season in India approaches, the spotlight turns to honeymoon travel, where couples aim to create a memorable, once-in-a-lifetime experience,” said Rajesh Magow, Co-founder and Group CEO of MakeMyTrip. “For the first time, we are sharing unique insights into booking trends that differentiate honeymoon travel from typical leisure trips.”
