Nagpur: A 77-year-old retired man from Mohan Nagar allegedly lost ₹3.80 lakh after an unidentified person contacted him on WhatsApp on the pretext of helping him obtain a senior citizen/citizen card and allegedly obtained his bank debit card details.

According to the complaint filed at Sadar police station, the victim, identified as Dominic Leonard D’Souza (77), lives in Mohan Nagar, in Nagpur.

Police said the victim received a WhatsApp communication from an unidentified mobile number. The accused allegedly claimed that he could help the senior citizen obtain a citizen card and sent him a PDF file related to the purported senior citizen registration.

The accused subsequently allegedly initiated a video call with D’Souza and obtained details of his Bank of India debit card. Using the information, the accused allegedly gained unauthorised access to the victim’s bank account and carried out online transactions amounting to ₹3.80 lakh.

The victim realised that money had been withdrawn from his account and approached the police.

Based on his complaint, Sadar police registered FIR against the unidentified accused under Sections 318(4) and 319(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) along with Sections 66(C) and 66(D) of the Information Technology Act.

The case has been registered against the unknown mobile number holder, and police are investigating the alleged cyber fraud and tracing the accused.

Police have urged citizens, particularly senior citizens, not to share debit/credit card details, PINs, OTPs or banking credentials with unknown callers or people contacting them through WhatsApp.
